Des was first shown the game of golf by his Dad at the tender age of 9, and began playing regularly at his home course, Vryburg Golf Club. Des quickly emerged as an awesome talent, and received his junior Springbok colours at the age of 15. He represented his country for 3 years, before going on to win the Junior World Championship in 1983. Des played collegiate golf in the States, attending the University of Houston. He later turned pro in 1987, and has since become an enormously popular figure on the Sunshine Tour. To date, Des has recorded 12 Tour victories, the last of which came in 2007 at the Samsung Royal Swazi Sun Open. He has recorded over R3.5 million in prize money during his career, and his unrelenting consistency has made him one of the longest serving players of the Sunshine Tour. Des has also tried his hand abroad, accumulating a wealth of international experience. He made his debut on the Asian PGA Tour in 1997, and finished a very impressive 8th in the Davidoff Tour Final Order of Merit. He also earned his Australian Tour card in 1999, where he recorded a 2nd place finish in the Benson and Hedges Malaysian Open. One of Des' greatest achievements came in 2000, when he finished in the Top 100 on the European Tour Order of Merit. He subsequently retained his card the following year, and still currently holds cards for the Asian, Australasian and European Tours. In between his travels and time on the course, Des is a family man. He was married in 1988, and has two daughters with his wife Zelda. He is also a big fan of fishing, and his best holiday memories have come in the form of safaris.
